On the night before it all began, I stayed up late watching the dark starlit sky with all its beautiful marvels, wondering if anything would ever destroy this beautiful world. Sometimes I guess the end is closer than it appears.
Ting! “Good morning America! Reporter Ashley Brown here with the news for Monday December 18th, 2012. There have been strange reports throughout the big apple and San Fran, about people coming from the dead. However no need to be alarmed for this occurrence because the EPA believes that it was just a hoax brought on by teenagers looking for fun.” At this time my head was pounding from exhaustion with the morning wakeup spell. Her words meant nothing to me for I was getting ready for another long, grotesque day at my slowly degrading school. When I got out of bed I walked to by bathroom and took a long good capture of myself. My 6’’ft 3’ body with my well-toned abdomen. Then I noticed my face short brown hair as usual by small rounded ears and my masculine face were doing well. I took a close look at myself In the mirror and I noticed something.
“Ahhh, newly brown whiskers coming in, sweet!
What are doing? Said my mother while she was prancing down the hallway. “oh I’m just getting ready like usual!” She lost interest in what I was doing and turned on the TV. I brushed my teeth, combed my hair and gathered my school clothes. “I’ve definitely have had better days then this,” I murmured.
The winter was all but absent this year, snow this and snow that, the temperature was a chilling 28 degrees the last time I checked. I put on a blue winter coat with cotton pockets with a lucky golden button saying “never lose hope” on it. I grabbed my blue jeans with a slight tear in the right above the knee and grabbed my shoes. I didn’t put them on yet because I was too lazy. So I walked downstairs with my things and right as I entered the living room I heard my mother drop a plate of china and gasp in shock. “My god, what is happening?! Now it seems really awkward but I thought she was talking about me but as I got a closer look I could tell she was watching the TV.
“hey mom why do u keep watching that its bad for you.” I said with a morning cry. “ oh shut it and come look at this, its getting worse every hour and they still haven’t said what or whom it is! With a shrug and a short sigh I walked over and watched the breaking news.
It was a chopper flying over NYC, and you could see smoke rising over the canopy of the man-made jungle. The screen zoomed in and people were running from something but all you could see was the smoke. So much of, as if the terriost attack from 9/11 was happening today. The reporter, Ashley Brown I guess, came out with a urgent report saying that the governor had called the national guard to help with the cause. She ended the report with, somebody has to help them!
As the commercials came on my mom turned off the TV and her head was faced toward the ground, shaking as if she was in self remorse for the people she could nothing about. “That’s enough of that.” She said. Her head swung toward her left to where I was standing and noticed all I had on was by blue coat.
With a smile she said, “What are you doing? Put those pants on and grab your bag.”
“Dejavu, isn’t it? You asked that like 5 minutes ago. Also if you didn’t notice you dropped your china on the floor.”
After that awkward moment I walked into the newly tiled kitchen with the half broken refrigerator that couldn’t deposit ice if it was fixed and given everything a fridge would want, opened it and grabbed my lunch. When I was stargazing the night before I made myself a nice hardy meal and I didn’t finish it. So in other terms that was my lunch. After scrounging the fridge for anymore items I closed the door and put my meal in by book bag lying on the kitchen table. My bag is different than others, for the reason I like the feel of being a mountaineer so I had a hiking backpack with the metal clips and the abundant amount of cubby holes buried in it.
With time passing by I didn’t even release school was about to start in twenty minutes. Being rushed, as almost always, I said the normal goodbye to my mother, with her have a “good days” and I was off. I swung by the podium by the front door grabbed my blackish greyish gloves and ran out the front door. As soon as the cold air breached my face and I felt the warmth of the house departing from behind I turned back and for some reason felt like it would be the last time I would ever see it. After looking at it the shrubs the size of industrial boxes and the bricks laying bend slightly to the side were still there. The American flag was still waving at full strength and the windows were still white with the black shudders still there. Even the cats were poking there small round heads with their pointed ears over the second floor balcony.
With nothing to see wrong I left and headed towards school.
Nordeland High School, my school, has about 3000 students and is located only about a mile away from my house. Rather close compared to other students but I was lucky and unlucky all at the same time.
My neighborhood is rather clean and well kept. As I walked down the street I passed a friend’s house. Tyler’s house. Tyler lives in a two story Tudor house with a big boulder in the front that cast an enormous shadow when the sun strikes midday. Since I was running late I assumed he had already left for school so I kept strolling along kicking a pebble that stumbled upon my foot. But you can never know for sure unless you see it for yourself. I learned the frightened way when he creep up from behind and threw an eraser at my head. With amazement I turned around looking for the culprit.
“How’s it going, man?” he exhaled the breath within his lungs and you could see the carbon dioxide rise into the atmosphere.
“Hey man! It’s going good you terd, out of all things why did you throw an eraser?” Tyler replied with a smart remark “it was the only thing I had to throw!” I shrugged and said, “Well you just threw away the possibility of changing your mistakes didn’t you? Anyways we got to hurry up before school starts.”
I always seem to speak in rhymes, hah comparing myself the great Socrates. The time was 8:20 a.m. school starts in 15 minutes as I watched the second hand speeded up before my own eyes putting the pressure on.
Tyler and I both fast walked down the brooks drive, the street connecting our neighborhood to the road our school was on, and couldn’t help ourselves and broke into conversation.
“Hey Brandon why are you running late today? Is it because your mommy wanted to give you a speech?”
“Ha-ha” I replied, “ nah I was just up late watching the stars and just asking myself questions.”
“Well, what kind of questions? Like… oh I know, whose going to be our new class president since the last one got sick.”
We were still walking with haste and a brushy sound came from the deciduous forest from our right. “Whoa what the heck is that coming from the woods!” with a exhausted yell I said.
The sound got louder and Tyler was guessing random animals it could possibly be, one animal he suggested was a pladdapus, oh how random some people can be. Then suddenly out of the ruckus Greg came barging out of the woods with twigs in his hair and a scratch on his forehead.
“Oh thank you it’s not a pladdapus” I replied.
Greg spoke with his tall stick like body and his voice like a second generation Italian. “Guys theres something in those woods and it’s not friendly at all!”
“Whoa whoa whoa calm down what are you talking about?” We both said at the same time. “ and why were you running in the woods in the first place?”
“ok, Greg said, ‘ I thought I saw omari, our class president, just walking in the woods, so I wanted check it out and.”
Tyler with complete in agreement praised, “Greg you’re kidding yourself you didn’t see anybody your just tired like Brandon and I, wipe yourself off and hurry with us to school.”
“but you don’t understand I saw him! And he was just walking and then he just turned around and screamed at me!” Then I made haste through those backwards woods and found you guys. For all I know it’s right there watching us!
I said, “Greg you must be insane or just plain dumb, now I’m not going to get in a 20minutes argument with you because school starts in 10minutes! Now let’s go! I’m not being late to Schrade’s retarted class.”
Greg recollected himself and brushed off the dirt on his NordeHigh hoodie and wiped off the blood on his forehead. For some reason there’s was a scratch on his neck it must have been some brush that nicked him.
“Ugh screw you guys, you’re not believing let’s just get to school, well pretend it never happened.”
“Fine”, replied Tyler, “now no more mishaps.” Greg, Tyler, and I all raced off to school. We had to hurry double-time. The wind gushed in giving us a fighting chill as we approached the entrance of the school. And ever since Greg came out of the woods it seemed as if he had lost some of his humanity, but there was no time to philosophize.
NordeHigh is a school for higher learning; however, with some of the pupils here I beg to differ, Especially some of my wild friends. Two in which are the ones running besides me at the moment, Greg and Tyler. Greg is a genius in Math, but when it comes to commonsense and Social studies, he’s better off dead. Tyler on the other hand, was not even close to becoming a math whiz he barely passed the exams last spring, but I’ll give him his rightful respect and say as a good friend would, he’s “troubled.” I had other friends of course at NordeHigh but, they were not as well-known as these two.
As we approached the grand-arch entrance of the school with the motto, “we succeed together” laid across it with the large steelish letters, other students were barging into each other getting to class.
“No, no, no, I still have to get to my locker, dang it!” I screamed with disbelief. “Alright guys I’ll see you in a bit. If I’m late well then just tell Schrade that…. Ahhh I don’t now just make something up!” I ran off leaving the two as they both paced to class.
“Go, Go, Go! Brandon! I can make it!” The hallways were always brightly lit and the fresh smell of the candles that lay outside the teachers class rooms were bringing a sedative mood upon me.
“Alright 30-24-46.” Cling! My crappy 4foot tall locker clanged open. “Lets see I need my history binder and let me get my pencil pouch for that essay. “Alright we are good to go!” I couldn’t believe I might make it to class on time. I slammed my locker shut and took a quick glance outside. The overcast had become worse and it looked as if I was about to release freezing rain.
Pleased with the excitement lurking in my body I jumped and ran off, then bang! I hit something. I was pushed back and a pretty girl was lying on the ground. Her face was rounded and very feminine too with long dark silky hair. She was wearing, from top to bottom, black leather jacket with a dirty hole near the arm stitching only some minds would now how she got that. I took a harder glance and she was also wearing, to what it seemed a red short sleeve shirt and underneath was a metal necklace, dog tags maybe? No she didn’t look that hardcore. My eyes trailed down her body and she had new skinny jeans on showing of her profound lower beauty.
I said stutterly, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you!” I helped her uneasy self of the cold ground “are you okay?”
“Thanks you asshole, you’re lucky Chris isn’t here ill have him whip your ass, you prick!” now right then I was thinking what is your problem lady? The lady kept bickering, “what’s your name dude, you better tell me or ill mess you up.”
“my name is Brand… Brandon.. Brandon Hobbs, I said I’m sorry can you at least accept my apology?”
The girl now changed her attitude completely with me, “oh my god, I’m sorry I didn’t know you were Chris’ best friend! Please forgive me!” I came back with, “ haha its okay, I guess, what your name again? Nikki right? Nikki…. Rohly?
“yep.” “ you got it right so I guess we better get off to class, and again sorry for that.”
As we said our good-byes all my hopes vanished as the school speakers screeched across the hallways and the rooms.
“Attention class, this is our principal speaking, now some of you may have heard the news, and I’m sorry to report this but the epidemic seems to have progressed faster than expected. I want all students to stay in their classrooms until proper situations are met.”
“Damn it, I said, now I’m really screwed when I get to class.”
It wasn’t even 25seconds later and the principal was going on about school procedures and then I heard a pounding on what seem to be a door. Principal Benedict was yelling, No! You can’t come in here! Wait what are you doing? Stop! Stop!
Shhhshhhshs. A static rose across the intercom and the school fell to a complete silence. If a pencil was dropped you could surely hear it.
Then somebody pulled the fire alarm and with what you would always expect, every student in school body came rushing out of their classrooms trampling there fellow friends, and classmates trying to find safety from this unknown “disease or animal” that was threating our life as we know it.
“My God this day keeps getting worse and worse, I better get the hell outside and find out where Greg and Tyler are.” I ran outside the two twinned doors that stood with a flickering exit sign barged them open and embraced myself for the inhospitable weather. I looked up towards the sky and the clouds were dark and the temperature was dropping. Then as I looked up a rain droplet landed on my forehead and ran down my cheek. I wiped it off and with no time in between hundreds started pouring the surroundings. Still looking towards the heavens, a light, bright and welcoming shined to a door across the maze of startled students and for some reason it felt like I was supposed to run to it.
“the school had gone to hell and I was finding myself escaping death second by second.”
With the mysterious illuminating light hovering over the door across the plaza I decided to make my way over to it. However as I began to run to it I noticed something strange. The students weren’t running from anybody, they were attacking each other. As if they had gone mad and a school wide riot had gone lose. There was a girl wearing a pink jacket with blood dripped across her face yelling in nothing but human. She grapped held of a student and started biting on his neck. It wasn’t friendly either it was the intention to kill, what the hell was going on?
The noise rose, the screams and the victims of the lost getting louder and louder. The girl yanked the poor boy on the ground and ripped off his juggler. His juggler for Christ sake! Then as the scent of blood appear dozens ran in and joined with the bloodshed of the kid, ripping and knawing him to shreds.
All in that moment it had dawned upon me, the end of days had come, this was no disease or virus or psychological disorder it was just pure chaos. There was nothing do for the end was near.
Standing there for a minute just yelling to the dead abyss, losing my conciscnous.
“Why! What did I do wrong! Tell me Damnit! What did I do wrong!.. My voiced shattered and the rain started to overcome me. Several tears accumulated around my eyes or it could just be the rain I don’t know it was both for all I knew.
“What did we do wrong! What did we do wrong.” My legs became uneasy and I needed to sit. I had become traumatized, all I could hear was the moans of sounds rushing into my ears and the light seemed to dim. More and more people were turning into things and all I needed to do was just wait for my exchange with the maker.
As I pondered on that spot in the wretched plaza I saw some people, strugglers fighting back this “force.” One by one they were pushing back the things.
“Watch out you! He’s coming for you!” a straggler yelling in my direction, Move!
All of sudden I realized that oh shit! She was talking about me.
Uurrmmm! One of things was charging at me! Before I could react it was pouncing on me!
Its teeth knawing through my gloves.
“Ahhh, somebody get this thing off of me!” “help!”
Its pure strength was enough to rip a man in two. Fighting its strength I was slowly losing a grip on the situation. My arms fighting to keep it off me.
“ahhhhhh, take that you scum!”
Blood splattered over my face and a baseball bat was in between the things head.
“oh shit, oh shit” I shoved it off my body and was reluctant to who I found.
“hey, buddy! Glad I’ve found you! It’s a good thing I got to you right then or you would be zombie chow right now wouldn’t you?” it was Chris, the one who saved my upcoming death.
“Brandon lets get out of here! Here take my hand.”
He helped me off the ground and grapped and looked at my hands with some holes chewed into it.
“Damn man, you’re lucky. If you weren’t wearing those gloves to prevent you from getting bit, only god knows what I would have to do to you.”
Only then did I really realize that losing your guard for even a split second could result in the worse.
“wha… what!? I replied.
“yeah man it would have to be done.”
“no not that, I screamed, what the fuck just happened! That goddamn “thing” was on top of me and it was just… just….”
“bro its over, hes gone! I took care of him.”
“your right, your right hes the fuck off of me and im unscaved, so were good right?”
Chris’ personality had definitely changed, the short well rounded fellow with a erg for video games had quelled. He had become a killer, a dealer of death with no self-remorse, but at least his funny ways of seeing the situation didn’t change. When I was recollecting my breath and gathering my thoughts, chris handed me a sharpened broom with the brushpart off.
“here Hobbs, take this I know it’s not much but it will be enough to push them back if they get close.”
“What! No I’m not taking that there’s no way it can protect me! There pure strength is too strong.”
Chris still stood there with his arm stretched out and a reassuring gesture was on his face. “trust me, it works ive already tried.”
With my confidence back I took the stick, nothing better could describe it now, and we were know teamed up for this undead nightmare.
“Where to first then? Was there anything you needed of high value here?”, chris said.
“um well can we please get over to that entrance first before we talk about that! You act like nothing is even happening!”
“oh, I’ve been waiting a long time for this, but I see how we need to get out of this plaza lets go.”
It’s about a 25yard run I think we can make just follow me.’
We rushed through the plaza with me in the lead and chris and his followers shortly behind. “ahhhhhh take that you undead pig!” kessh! Kack! Keep moving! Chris screeched.
One after “thing” after another we knocked down and kept moving getting closer to those doors. When we reached them Chris, his girlfriend and I barged through the doors and closed them shut.
“No! Damnit how could we of lost the rest of them! I was suppose to save them! Josh and Carlos I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.” I had never heard him with such passion of grief before. Whoever had started this disease I hope was killed by them.
Chris turned from the door with tears in his eyes, ignoring Nikki and I, lets go he said.
The Hallway of the school had turned dark with only strained sunlight from the clouded skies skimmed through. It had become silent with only the scent of my dead classmates. “ugh this smell is outrageous!” Nikki, claimed.
“Sshhshh! With my fingers over my lips. “Get over to the corner now.” We all sprinted to the conjunction of the hallways. “did you see that?”
“no I didn’t what was it, was it one of them or what?” chris whispered.
“down the hallway is my first period class but it was all silent and something didn’t feel right walking down there.”
I didnt finish it, but it was fun to write
